Coming soon to Main Street: Paperwhirl

Paperwhirl co-owner Kitty Woo plans to relocate her business to 151 Main St. in coming weeks. Woo cited increased foot traffic on Main Street as the primary reason for the move.

A little more than a year after its debut in downtown Los Altos, First Street retailer Paperwhirl is relocating to a new home – in downtown Los Altos.

Paperwhirl co-owner Kitty Woo told the Town Crier that she’s moving the shop, which features unique gifts and stationery – to 151 Main St. The store carries several lines of customizable stationery products, including birth announcements and wedding invitations.

Although no exact date for the move has been scheduled, Woo hopes to be settled by September, after some minor renovations in the new retail space are completed. Woo and business partner Chris Chang opened the first store at 235 First St. in May 2012. She said the decision to relocate to Main Street offers one distinct advantage – more feet on the street.

“We think we need the foot traffic that Main Street offers,” said Woo, who also co-owns a Paperwhirl located at 230 University Ave. in downtown Palo Alto. “Our store is all about impulse buying.”

Woo said she and her partner didn’t consider relocating outside of Los Altos. They examined various available retail spaces throughout downtown before finding 151 Main in May. She added that despite the eventual move to Main Street, her first year in Los Altos has been generally positive. She credited Los Altos’ small-town atmosphere for her early success.

“I love it,” Woo said. “I like the people a lot – they’re very dear and very loyal. They want us to be here.”
