Updated 11:44 a.m. Aug. 18:The passenger killed Sunday afternoon (Aug. 16) in an Interstate 280 traffic accident in Los Altos Hills was a 17-year-old San Rafael resident, county officials announced Tuesday.

The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner-Coroner Office identified the victim as Ali Hashim Modan. Six other young men from Mill Valley and Sausalito, between the ages of 16 and 21, sustained major injuries, and emergency personnel transported them to either Santa Clara Valley Medical Center or Stanford Medical Center.

The single-vehicle accident occurred just before 5 p.m. in the northbound lanes of the highway north of the Foothill Expressway exit, according to a California Highway Patrol report. For reasons currently unknown, the 2006 Toyota Sienna minivan containing the young men left the roadway and entered the center median, where it overturned and struck several trees.

Alcohol and/or drugs do not appear to be a factor in the crash, according to the CHP. The injured all wore seatbelts, but it is not known whether Modan was properly restrained.

The CHP encourages witnesses of the accident to report information that could aid the investigation by calling Officer A. Lopez-Martinez at 369-6261.
