You’ll notice comments on our online news stories look different these days – we’re experimenting with the Facebook Comments Plugin, which has led to a dramatic increase in people using real names. But it also offends some readers who don’t want us to require Facebook credentials to comment. When we tried an in-house user registration system, the majority of commenters declined to register using real names – and anonymous comments were often harsher in tone.
We’ve been testing different tools because we want to make it easy for our community to talk to the newspaper, and each other, about the news as we report it.
Real humans in our little newsroom (hello!) moderate comments and monitor user registration to block abusive language and spam. We’ve seen the highest-quality conversation when people use real names, but many want to comment anonymously.
