Family fun in the Hills

Socially Speaking

Mark your calendar: Invitations haven't gone out yet, but Los Altos Hills residents should circle Sunday, May 31. From 2-5 p.m., the town will sponsor a wonderful family picnic day at the Los Altos Hills Little League field. This will be a fun day to meet and greet your Hills neighbors. Los Altos Hills resident Kathy Perga, who is on the planning committee for this afternoon event, said there will be a "make your own ice cream sundae" booth, music and games for the family.

Going places: If you weren't at the 11th annual Junior League of Palo AltoMid Peninsula fashion show recently held at the Hiller Aviation Museum in San Carlos, you missed a great party. Board member Mary Johnson of Los Altos marveled at the professionalism of the models for both the luncheon and black-tie dinner extravaganza. "Water in the dining tent and even a short electrical power outage during the evening fashion show couldn't dampen the spirits of the models and the party-goers," she said. "Everyone was dazzled by the food, fashions and entertainment. The evening was a success, and I'm sure we're on target for raising our goal of $175,000 for community projects."

Singled out: A special honor was bestowed upon Los Altos resident Sandy Arton by Peninsula Children's Center Charter Auxiliary as Volunteer of the Year Award. Sandy has been a member of the auxiliary, which raises funds and serves children with autism and development difficulties, since 1991. Her reason for joining and continuing to volunteer? "It's the children," she said. "I can't think of a better way to spend my time."

Speaking of single: The Spinsters of San Francisco held their annual mother-daughter luncheon at The Clift in San Francisco on April 4. Jennifer Carmichael, former Los Altos resident and daughter of Arthur and Jean Carmichael (former mayor of Los Altos) was one of the lucky members on the planning committee for the event and participated in a special "tasting" to decide the final menu. Founded in 1929, this group of young, single, college educated women has evolved into a community-oriented social and philanthropic organization of more than 175 from all
