Residents on both sides of the abortion debate march in downtown Los Altos.

Local proponents of the pro-choice and pro-life movements are scheduled to mark the 38th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion in the United States, with demonstrations Monday in downtown Los Altos.

Both groups are scheduled to walk on Main Street at the same time, on opposite sides of the street.

The Pro-Life Mass and Prayer Walk, which coincide with the national March for Life in Washington, D.C., are scheduled to begin with Mass, celebrated by the Rev. Larry Purcell, at 11:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Church, 473 Lincoln Ave.

The 27th annual Prayer Walk follows the service at approximately 12:30 p.m., proceeding eight blocks from St. Nicholas through downtown Los Altos to city hall.

Chastity Ronan, director of the Alpha Pregnancy Center in San Francisco, is scheduled to address the walkers.

For more information, contact Hubert Lipinski at 493-3156.

Step Out for Pro-Choice, the annual rally and walk sponsored by the Los Altos-Mountain View Branch of the American Association of University Women, is scheduled noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday, beginning at the Los Altos Youth Center, 1 N. San Antonio Road.

Sara Kennedy, M.D., MPH, Physicians for Reproductive Choice, will address the group. Kennedy, an obstetrician and gynecologist, is a second-year family-planning fellow at UC San Francisco.

The community is invited. The walk was initiated in 2002 to offer counterpoint to the annual prayer walk for life sponsored by the local Catholic Church.

Registration is $1 at the door.
