SF graduate Ellison retires from NFL

After an eight-year career in the NFL, St. Francis High graduate Rhett Ellison (Class of 2007) announced last month that he is retiring from pro football. The tight end played his first five seasons with the Minnesota Vikings, who drafted him out of USC in 2012, and the last three with the New York Giants. Ellison caught 118 passes for 1,189 yards and seven touchdowns in his career.

Los Altos brothers honored for grades

The Central Coast Section recently recognized The Harker School boys soccer team, which includes brothers Jeffrey and Justin Fung of Los Altos, for its work in the classroom. The CCS Division III champion Eagles won a 2019-20 Winter Season Scholastic Championship Team Award for posting a collective grade-point average of 3.78, the second best among the section’s boys soccer teams. The top five teams in each sport received an award.

MV Sports Boosters host golf tourney

The Mountain View High School Sports Boosters 2020 Golf Tournament is slated April 18 at Shoreline Golf Links. Registration begins at 11 a.m. and the shotgun start is set for noon. MVHS families, friends and students are welcome to participate in the third annual tourney, which uses a best-ball format. Registration is $150 for adults and $100 for students; cost includes lunch and happy-hour event. Proceeds benefit the school’s athletic department. Adult softball league welcomes players

The Vintage Softball Club of Santa Clara County, a slow-pitch league for men and women age 50 and over that includes Los Altos residents, seeks new members for 2020. Founded in 1987, the club offers year-round Saturday and weekday leagues – along with Monday nights in spring/summer – open to all skill levels. Some players are novices, most are intermediate and a few are in the Senior Softball Hall of Fame. A bat and glove are required. The annual membership fee is $50-$100. St. Francis wrestler places at state

St. Francis High junior Carsten Rawls placed eighth in the 182-pound division at the state wrestling championships. Porterville’s Tyler Avila beat Rawls 4-2 in the seventh-place match Feb. 29 in Bakersfield.

St. Francis defeats Mountain View in softball and boys lacrosse

Jessica Oakland takes a swing for the Lancers. She slugged a homer and hit a double in St. Francis’ 4-2 victory.

The St. Francis High softball team slugged two home runs in last week’s season opener, a 4-2 non-league win over visiting Mountain View.

Both homers came in the fourth inning – Jessica Oakland hit a solo shot and Kennedy Adkison belted a two-run bomb that put the Lancers ahead 3-2. Oakland also drove in a run in the first with a double March 11.

Local marathoner takes 5th in division

Dirk Hoekstra of Los Altos placed fifth in his division of the Napa Valley Marathon March 1. Competing in the men’s 70-99 age group, he finished the race in 4 hours, 42 minutes, 16 seconds.
