Local teens raise funds for masks

Los Altos High School junior Angelina Lue and a group of friends are raising money to purchase masks for health-care workers.

As of April 10, the teens had collected more than $7,800 and donated 6,000-plus surgical masks to hospitals and health-care facilities throughout the Bay Area.

The group also purchased N95 masks and additional surgical masks they plan to distribute once they arrive. Health-care workers have been facing shortages of personal protective equipment, including masks, as they treat patients with the coronavirus.

Surgical mask recipients include Palo Alto Medical Foundation, Stanford Health Care and Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

Countdown to College event moves online

The Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District’s annual Countdown to College event is going virtual this year.

The event was scheduled April 1 at Mountain View High School. In light of the shelter-in-place order, the MVLA High School Foundation worked with the school’s College and Career Center to move the event online.

Countdown to College is usually a conference-style event where parents and students attend college related-workshops on topics such as letters of recommendation and applying for financial aid.

“It’s really always been an important event to launch the college search process,” said Kristine Bardman, co-executive director of the foundation.

Now, students and parents can visit a website where they can view presentations on a range of college topics. There is also a document linking to virtual college tours for a variety of California colleges and universities.
