Two events are scheduled later this month in downtown Los Altos to help ensure the safety of students biking to school.
• The Los Altos Police Department is sponsoring its second Bike Safety Rodeo, slated 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 27 at Hillview Community Center, 97 Hillview Ave.
Members of Safe Moves, a nonprofit organization specializing in teaching children bike safety, will conduct the event. Participants will navigate a course filled with cardboard cutouts resembling obstacles they may encounter biking to school. Safe Moves staff will evaluate their performances and discuss the results, aiming to educate and inform young cyclists.
Participants are asked to bring their bikes, though some will be available on loan.
• A bike safety check – co-sponsored by the city and GreenTown Los Altos – is scheduled for the same time and date on the Los Altos Downtown Green, located on Third Street between Main and State streets.
GreenTown volunteers will conduct ABC (air, brakes, chain) safety checks and ensure that bike helmets fit properly.
Mike Tkalcevic, an intern at GreenTown, said the main goal is “getting kids (to be) a little more aware of bike safety, making sure they know how to deal with traffic and getting parents engaged.”
Holding both events downtown “allows all the elementary and junior high schools to come together and attend,” added GreenTown member Arnold Ambiel.
