Gap Year: Local students take time between high school and college to explore their interests

Mountain View High School alumnus Sam Moore is currently taking a gap year. In addition to starting his own business, he has backpacked in Patagonia, left.

In each of the past six years, Los Altos High School has hosted a Gap Year Fair – and it has nothing to do with celebrating the clothing store.

The fair focuses on the gap year that some students take between high school and college. Many who choose the alternative are seeking a respite from schoolwork while pursuing other interests before transitioning to a university.

Local student's project captures "Humans of Los Altos"


Photographer Brandon Stanton’s “Humans of New York” project has captured poignant portraits over the past five years that make the everyday exceptional – and inspired a local project to catalogue the “Humans of Los Altos.”

Los Altos resident Tiffany Wu wanted to document that same spirit in her own hometown, so she started gathering portrait shots last spring, during her senior year at Los Altos High School.

LA Youth Commission organizes array of events

Volunteers from the Los Altos Youth Commission help run city events, including the annual Spring Egg Hunt, scheduled 10 a.m. April 4 at Hillview Soccer Field this year.

Jake Klepper comes from a long line of volunteers, and when the Los Altos resident saw his opportunity to give back, he didn’t hesitate.

After learning about openings on the Los Altos Youth Commission through an advertisement in the Town Crier, the teen jumped at the chance to participate.

Ah, kids and cuss words. In this day and age – maybe in every day and age – what comes out of the mouths of babes should not surprise.
