House tour in Rose Garden
A house tour of four homes in the Rose Garden area of San Jose will feature festive tables and floral designs by noted floral professionals and an elegant tea and gift gallery.
Benefiting the San Jose Symphony Auxiliary and the St. Martin of Tours School Parent Guild, the tour is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Oct. 17 and Oct. 18. Tickets are $20. An expert on historic garden restoration and a talented flower arranger will highlight "Seasonal Inspirations," the Gamble Garden Center's annual floral event.
Chip Callaway, a landscape architect and designer, will present a slide show on the restoration of historic southern gardens and Kren Rasmussen, owner of Bloomster's, Inc. in San Jose, will demonstrate seasonal floral ideas. Between the talks a lunch will be served to all participants, with a boutique nearby featuring gifts, Chinese porcelains and a collection of antique Chinese baskets and trunks.
The event will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Oct. 20, at the Cubberley Community Center Theater, 4000 Middlefield Road, in Palo Alto. Tickets are $45. For information and reservations, call 329-1356.
Self-guided Filoli tours
Visitors to the world-renowned house and gardens of Filoli in Woodside may now enjoy the freedom of a self-guided tour on Thursdays as well as Fridays and Saturdays, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (no admission to the grounds after 2 p.m.). No reservations are required and admission on all three days is $10.
For a guided tour by a trained docent, a reservation is necessary. Guided tours are available Tuesday through Saturday and also cost $10. Filoli is located on Canada Road, west of Highway 280 in Woodside. For more information, call 364-8300, ext. 507.

Mixed paper recycling begins in Mtn. View
The city of Mountain View and Foothill Disposal are adding mixed paper and cardboard collection to the city's curbside recycling program. Materials such as junk mail, magazines, envelopes, catalogs, cereal boxes, notebook paper or cardboard bozes can now be recycled through the new program instead of tossed in the trash.
The program will be phased in citywide over a five-week period, with single-family homes receiving a black recycling bin for mixed paper or cardboard.
