Wedding To Remember

If you’re planning a wedding, bridal shower, anniversary or house party, consider ways to infuse your celebration with extra flare. Flowers can do just that and more.
Talin Tascian, a Los Altos-based floral designer and owner of Fleur De Vie, shares the following tips on finding a designer who can execute a cohesive aesthetic vision.

There are several steps in planning for perfect flowers. Below, I offer advice and recommendations, from start to finish.
• Schedule meetings with floral designers six to nine months prior to your wedding date. Because every floral designer has a different style and approach, I recommend meeting with approximately three designers. Consulting with several designers will give you a basis for comparison and help you find one that complements your vision.
• Choose a floral designer with a portfolio that matches your style. If you give 20 floral designers the same materials and design inspiration, the result will be 20 completely different designs. Take the time to select a designer whose style most closely suits your own.
• Finalize your color palette before meeting with the floral designer. Color is one of the most important wedding design decisions you will make. Your color palette affects everything from flowers to dresses, table favors, cake decorations and even invitations.
• Don’t be afraid of color. Most brides select white, beige, silver and gold because they believe neutral colors are safe choices. Unless those colors genuinely represent your style, don’t choose them. Instead, consider two or three vibrant colors – a decision that will instantly make your wedding a more personal experience.
• Determine a theme and style that will define your look. Is your event going to be formal, funky, retro, art-deco, beach casual, earthy and organic, tropical, zen, rustic or wine-country chic? The possibilities are endless. By giving your designer an idea of your vision, he or she will be better equipped to deliver flowers that are personalized and meaningful.
• Collect photos and magazine clippings that inspire you. To assist the floral designer in understanding your style, bring 15-20 pictures and clippings to your first meeting. Alternately, copy and paste the images into a document and email them to prospective floral designers ahead of your meetings. If there are flowers, containers, arrangements or color swatches you like, bring them along.
• Remember to share wedding details. To help your designer understand your wedding concept and vision, share pictures of your dress, bridal-party attire, invitations, linens, place cards, party favors, cake design and other special items you plan to incorporate in your celebration. By sharing these important details, you’ll help the designer build on a consistent wedding theme.
• Select a designer who makes you feel good. Base your final selection on whether the person makes you feel comfortable. He or she should be someone you trust to execute your wedding-day vision.

• Will you provide me with a written breakdown of costs by arrangement and floral element?
• Will you include an itemized summary of the cost of individual flowers and all materials?
• Will you create my arrangements yourself?
• Who will supervise flower delivery and setup the day of the wedding?
• Am I able to keep the containers and design elements of the floral arrangement after the wedding?
• Are there additional charges for delivery, setup and takedown? Are there any additional fees or expenses that could arise?
