Carfax Vehicle History Service of Fairfax, Va., has announced the addition of 40 million new California emission records to its 500-million-strong database.
Just what do these records mean to California consumers?
In addition to other pertinent information in a Carfax report - such as lemon or totaled-vehicle information - consumers can now see yearly mileage history on registered California vehicles. Used car shoppers can now either trust the "little old lady from Palo Alto" who is selling a car she says is five years old with 10,000 miles on it, or uncover any discrepancies in mileage with yearly odometer readings dating back to 1990.
California emission records help track the history of multiple-owner vehicles, as well as single-owner vehicles, because of the mandated annual reporting of information. Mileage data is recorded no matter how many times a vehicle does or does not change hands.
