Some local residents may not realize how many automotive treasures are parked behind garage doors in Los Altos and Los Altos Hills. The owners of these vintage vehicles often display them at community events, such as the ones listed below.
Los Altos Kiwanis Pet Parade. An array of fine cars will transport pets and their owners down Main Street at the 60th-anniversary event, scheduled May 19.
Annual Los Altos Hills Town Picnic. Nearly 40 vintage cars, tractors, a fire engine and small-combustion engines will be displayed at the 10th annual event, scheduled 1-4 p.m. June 3 on the Little League fields on Purissima Road.
Los Altos Community Picnic. About 30 vehicles - a variety of makes and vintages - will be on display outside the Los Altos History Museum at the annual event. This year's picnic is scheduled Sept. 9 at the Civic Center, Hillview Avenue at San Antonio Road.
Corvette Spectacular Car Show. More than 150 Corvettes, dating from 1953, are expected to line Main Street Sept. 9.
Los Altos Fall Festival. The annual two-day event, scheduled Oct. 6-7, includes an area showcasing more than 100 vehicles - from the classic to the unusual. A marque vehicle is chosen each year, with a car from all the years of that make displayed.
Los Altos High School Homecoming Parade. Ten to 12 vintage cars annually carry the homecoming court and other students down Main Street. This year's parade is scheduled Oct. 12.
Festival of Lights Parade. Marking the beginning of the holiday season, the annual parade features several classic cars transporting the mayors of Los Altos and Los Altos Hills down Main Street in Los Altos. The 2007 parade is scheduled Nov. 25.
Los Altos History Museum. Several automobiles are now on display, such as a red 1929 Franklin, a white 1959 Thunderbird and a blue 1955 Oldsmobile, for the "Hooray for the Red, White and Blue" exhibit of historic American flags.
Donut Derelicts. An informal forum of auto enthusiasts meets 8:30 a.m. Saturdays (weather permitting) at Main Street Cafe & Books in downtown Los Altos. Look for their cars in the parking lot behind the cafe on State Street. Members talk cars as they sip coffee and nibble breakfast treats.
