Monique Kane, executive director of the Community Health Awareness Council (CHAC), was all smiles as she gave reporters a tour of the nonprofit agency’s new headquarters at 590 W. El Camino Real in Mountain View. Staff moved into the new offices in late June.
“It’s been an enormous help to the interns,” said Kane of the expanded workspace. “They can find quiet places. The new building is perfect for us – it’s professional yet warm and inviting. It is so much more spacious than our other site, giving us ample room to serve our clients. We will be able to offer more groups and classes due to (the availability of) several large spaces.”
And that’s important to the work of an agency that has been counseling and educating at-risk students and their families since 1973. The support, offered at low or no cost depending on financial ability, serves 33 K-12 local schools.
CHAC has scheduled an open house 5-7 p.m. Friday to enable local residents to tour the new facilities. The evening will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, courtesy of the Mountain View Chamber of Commerce, and remarks from Mountain View Mayor John Inks and Santa Clara County Supervisor Joe Simitian.
The 7,330-square-foot building, acquired in a land swap with the Malek family, more than doubles the size of CHAC’s previous headquarters at 711 Church St. The Maleks eyed the Church Street building as vital to development of an adjacent office-condominium project at 605 Castro St.
Kane frequently refers to the new building as “The Miracle on El Camino.”
Gone are the cramped, overcrowded rooms. The new building boasts more than 20 offices, a conference room and a large training room that can accommodate up to 156 people. Colorful walls along the hallways feature the artwork of CHAC employees. A mural, painted earlier this year by current CHAC interns, brightens the far wall of a 12-stall underground parking garage.
