New restaurant pairs fast food with flourishes
The Mountain View burger joint The Counter is assembling dishes to order at 2580 W. El Camino Real in the new Village at San Antonio Center.
A chain started in Santa Monica in 2003, the restaurant balances a casual, order-at-the-counter style with a lengthy list of upscale burger fixings, including Danish blue cheese, homemade guacamole, sun-dried tomatoes and toppings like roasted garlic aioli and ginger soy glaze.
Customers can order a burger-in-a-bowl, perched atop greens rather than a bun, or choose from a range of breads including ciabatta and English muffin. Beer, wine and cocktails are also on order.
Arrive prepared to pencil in your pick of protein, toppings, sauce and bun on a clipboard, The Counter’s signature menu style.

East Coast-style subs on the menu in MV
Jersey Mike’s Subs starts serving up grilled sandwiches today just down the street from The Counter, at 624 San Antonio Road. A grand-opening free sub fundraiser, scheduled today through July 21, benefits the Community School of Music and Arts. Coupon-holders can get a free regular sub for a minimum $1 contribution to the school.
The sandwich chain originated on the Jersey Shore in 1956 and now operates nearly 100 shops around the country, offering fresh-sliced meats and cheese piled on bread baked in-store.

Make sausage at Hidden Villa
Charcuterie chef Quentin Levy is scheduled to demonstrate Beginning Sausage Making using fresh Italian chicken sausage with fennel, anise and spicy pepper flakes 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Hidden Villa’s Duveneck House, 26870 Moody Road, Los Altos Hills.
Participants 21 and over can learn how to make their own homemade sausages, including a classic, cured Sopressa salami, featuring pasture-raised organic pork, Tellicherry peppercorns and Utah pink mineral salt. Learn how to pick the healthiest, most sustainably produced and tastiest ingredients, then sample sausage specialties from around the world paired with wine.
Cost is $65 per person.
