Rich Halliday, 65, of Grants Pass died Monday, January 26, 2015 at his home. He was born October 14, 1949 in Pittsburgh, PA to Joseph R Halliday, Sr. and Elenora (Coppler) Halliday. He grew up in Los Altos, CA.

Rich proudly served 4 years in the Marine Corps as a sergeant, and was stationed in North Carolina and Japan. He later became a Design Engineer in corporate construction for Hewlett-Packard, and supervised projects in many foreign countries. After retiring from HP, he worked for Josephine County as a Property/Facilities Manager.

Mary Jane Hill Trowbridge passed away January 20, 2015 at Villa Fontana in San Jose, California.

Born December 23, 1916 in Columbia, Missouri, she was the daughter of Gertrude Lyon Hill and Robert E. Lee (Bob) Hill. Her father was the Director of Alumni Activities at the University of Missouri from 1921-1944. 

She was educated in the public schools of Columbia, attended Stanford University one year, graduated from the University of Missouri in 1939. As an active member of Pi Beta Phi sorority she was awarded the Amy B. Onken Award. Following graduation she established a new chapter of Pi Beta Phi at Lawrence University in Appleton, Wisconsin.

MARJORIE OLSEN CRAY

Marjorie Olsen Cray passed away peacefully on January 18, 2015. Margie will be remembered for her radiant smile, her gracious manners, and her service to others.

Marjorie was born on September 9, 1924 in Passaic, New Jersey to Esther Cutting Olsen and Oscar Olsen. She attended grammar and secondary school at Passaic Collegiate, and then studied at Wellesley College from which she graduated in 1945, majoring in Sociology. Days later she married the love of her life, Gordon Cameron (“Cam”) Cray. Margie and Cam fell in love with California after moving to the Long Beach area where Cam was stationed before serving in the Pacific on an Army medical ship.  During this time Margie attended the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Southern California.

Musicians inspire Silicon Valley League of SF Symphony

Three Los Altos-area musicians have provided leadership to the Silicon Valley League of the San Francisco Symphony by supporting the musicians and outreach efforts of the world-renowned orchestra.

Past presidents Charlene Archibeque, Eileen Shelle Birnbaum and Sue Larson said they support the Silicon Valley League because of their devotion to the symphony and its conductor, Michael Tilson Thomas.

RUBY DOSHIM LAI

Ruby Doshim Lai was born on July 26, 1929 and passed away at home on January 10, 2015. A resident of Los Altos for over 50 years, Ruby is survived by her husband Bill; children Gwen, Tracy and Allyn; and grandchildren Kiyoshi and Misa.

Born on Mott Street in the heart of New York City's Chinatown, Ruby spent several years in the Ming Quong Home for girls in Oakland, CA, and graduated from Oakland High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree from UC Berkeley, received her teaching credential from San Francisco State College and completed a Masters degree in Librarian Studies at San Jose State University.

Rodney D. Aschenbrenner, a long-time resident of Los Altos Hills, passed away in Bellingham, WA on December 8th, 2014, at the age of 91. Although he traveled and moved many times throughout his career, he and his family would return time and again to the family home bordering Fremont Road during the 40 years from 1967 to 2007.

Jean Tait Burke, 93, of Los Altos, CA., passed away peacefully on January 10, 2015.

Jean was born September 11, 1921 in Oil City, PA. Jean was named after her grandfather, Eugene Crouch, a contractor and builder in Oil City. She was the oldest of three children after her older brother Zachary passed away shortly after birth. Her sister Cynthia and brother Howard passed away in 2007 and 2005 respectively.

Krystyna Piotrowska-Ciołkosz of Mountain View in California, of Washington and Pennsylvania, of London, Paris, Brussels, of WARSAW, Poland – the objective, always honorable and honest, active witness of history, the cosmopolitan Polish lady, proud of the good in her homeland and appalled by any substandard behavior of her compatriots, the enthusiastic embracer of the greatness of America and the staunch critic of any bigotry and hypocrisy, the lover of good music and opera, the sporty and elegant beauty, maturing but always remaining young in spirit, the superb hostess and wonderful cook at an elegant table, the world traveler, connoisseur of good taste, the most loyal friend, the trusted confidante to rebellious young and troubled aged alike, the respected professional businesswoman and disciplined manager, the passionate bridge player, and above all the member of so many adopted families which would never have been the same without her and which never will be the same upon her departure - which, by the way, was on her own terms: peaceful, elegant, in her own bed, upon saying good-night to her friends with a knowing smile which proudly said: a good actor knows when it is time to leave the stage.
