JAMES J. SCHRIVER

A longtime resident of Santa Clara, Calif., passed away peacefully at home while surrounded by family on August 4, 2014. He was 87.

Known as "Jim" by his closest friends, "Buddy" by his family, and "Grandpa" by his many grandchildren, James Schriver was born February 9, 1927 in Werner, N.D. He spent much of his childhood in Fargo, ND. Jim enlisted in the United States Navy in Jan 1945 at the age of 17, and quickly began work as a flight mechanic working alongside pilots and engineers to maintain the Navy's air fleet. Jim would spend the next 22 years in service of his country, traveling around the world. In his later years, Jim loved to boast that his service allowed him to visit all seven continents on the globe — even Antarctica.

MAXINE S. GOAD

Maxine Steineke Goad died Monday, July 28, 2014, at the age of 83 of multi-infarct dementia.  She was preceded in death in the year 2000 by her husband Walter B. Goad. She is survived by her children Marian Goad, Chris Goad, and Donna Goad (Paul Johnson) and grandsons (all of New Mexico), her sister Marian Taaffe of Los Altos Hills, her Taaffe nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephew.

She was born November 17, 1930, in Palo Alto, California, to Max and Florence Steineke.

WESLEY PIERCE AYRES

Wes passed away peacefully at his home on July 27,2014, just two months before his 90th birthday.

Born in Los Angeles, his family moved to Fresno when Wes was 14 years old. He joined the Navy in 1943, serving on a destroyer in the Pacific theater. 

He and the former Mickie O'Neal met after his return to Fresno, and were married on March 12, 1948. The young couple moved to the Bay Area where Wes earned his PhD in physics at Stanford University. In 1955 Wes and Mickie moved to Los Altos, where they raised their two sons, Tim and Dan.

TIMOTHY WARREN WATSON (TIM)

Born June 2, 1935, died peacefully on August 11, at home in Mountain View, surrounded by his family. He died of complications of Parkinson’s Disease after a courageous 15-year battle.

Tim was the beloved husband of 55 years to his college sweetheart, Ann. He was born in Boulder, Colorado to Robert J. and Gretchen Warren Watson, and was the eldest of 5 children.

Maj. Benjamin Closs, back turned to the camera, leads a Marine Corps training exercise Aug. 3.

Los Altos native Maj. Benjamin Closs is currently serving as the intelligence deputy with the I Marine Expeditionary Brigade.

Closs led participants Aug. 3 in a large-scale exercise at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms. The exercise involved strengthening relationships with allies while ensuring that the Marine brigade could rapidly respond to crises around the globe.

Local flutist takes award


Los Altos resident Apoorva Rangan won first place in the High School Flute Soloist competition during the National Flute Association’s annual convention, held Aug. 7-10 in Chicago.

The National Flute Association, founded in 1972, is the largest flute organization in the world. It comprises approximately 5,000 members from more than 50 countries.

Edwin F. Schmitz died peacefully at home surrounded by family and friends.

Ed was born on July 29, 1928 in Madison, Wisconsin. He was the youngest of 5 children of Gertrude and F Edwin Schmitz. He was a lovable playful child called “Snicky” and “the last twig on the vine”!

He attended Edgewood High School in Madison and Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa.
