OBIT MelvinHammer

Melvin (Mel) Hammer, 89, passed away Wednesday, February 17th, 2016 of pancreatic and liver cancer at his home in Rancho Bernardo. He was a very beloved son, brother, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, and true friend. Melvin was born on February 14th, 1927 in Cleveland, OH and moved to San Diego, CA in 1975. Melvin is survived by his son Robert Hammer (Tammy), Morgan Hill, CA; son Neil Hammer,Aliso Viejo, CA; daughter Nancy Grunewald (Mark), Riverside,CA; daughter-in-law Kathy Hammer; grandchildren; Oren Hammer (Amber), Evan Grunewald, Jordan Hammer, Eve Grunewald, Jade Hammer and two great grandchildren. Mel was preceded in death by his wife Aileen Hammer, his son Arnold Hammer, and his sister Helen Friedman.


OBIT EmilyDevine

Emily Jane Davies Devine of Los Altos, CA passed away peacefully in her sleep in the early morning hours of February 19, 2016.

Emily was born on September 8, 1918 in Lowellville, Ohio. She was the oldest of four children of a musically gifted Welsh father and Cornish mother. Their life in their small town revolved around the Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. Emily loved school and dreamt of being a teacher. After the family lost their father at a young age, Emily worked her way through high school and college, graduating from Youngstown College in 1940 with degrees English and History.


OBIT CharlesPelton

Charles (Chuck) Pelton, 87, passed away from a massive heart attack on January 29, 2016. Up to the day of his death he was a robust, active man who managed his physically–challenged wife Claire and two large Bernese Mountain dogs (one that had lost the use of her back legs) with ease and affection. He could be seen almost daily walking to the State St. Peet’s with his wife and two Berners by his side. To say “he will be missed” is an understatement for all his family including daughter Cathie, son Jim, his Berners, and even the Peet’s staff who mourn his passing.

June 27, 1939 – February 7, 2016

Paul Griffiths passed away Sunday, February 7, 2016 at his home. Born June 27, 1939 in New York City to Phoebe Wilson and Edward Griffiths, Paul was the beloved eldest son of five children. He was a kind and loving brother to his brother Peter, and to his sisters Jane, Elizabeth, and Catherine. 

Homestead student wins grant for science research

Homestead High School freshman Anika Sanya works in a laboratory on her project on natural solutions for lowering cholesterol. She recently won a grant to aid her research.

After discovering how much money her father spends on cholesterol medication, Homestead High School freshman Anika Sanya set out to find a more affordable solution.

“I’ve always been interested in science,” the 14-year-old Los Altos resident said. “I’ve always wanted to find things that would relate to the world.”


OBIT DeeRopers

Dee Ropers, a long time Los Altos resident, passed away on October 25th, 2015 in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. She is survived by her three children: Kelyn Dewar of Los Altos Hills; Karen Ropers of Tahoe City; Mark Ropers of Ashland, Oregon; their spouses and six grandchildren.


OBIT EllenOtto

July 25, 1944 - February 10, 2016

Born to Lyle and Olive (Freeman) Cook in 1944, Ellen grew up with her three siblings in Menlo Park, California. She was a proud Stanford University alumna graduating with a degree in history in 1966. Stanford introduced her to many wonderful people in her life including her husband, Jim Otto, whom she married in December, 1965. The marriage lasted until Jim's untimely death due to melanoma in 1998.


OBIT HelenCone

Helen Irene Bailey was born on October 18th, 1925 to Wilbur and Letitia Bailey in San Jose, California. She was their fourth child, preceded by two brothers and a sister, all of whom predeceased her. Helen passed away on February 5, 2016 after a brief illness.
