Larry Madsen: Architect and community servant


Mr. Madsen

Longtime Los Altos resident Larry Madsen passed away peacefully Nov. 19 surrounded by his family, after fighting cancer for many years.

Mr. Madsen was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1930 and moved with his family to Long Beach when he was 7 years old. He and his sister, Barbara, spent much of their time on the beach and in the waves, and he had a lifetime love of water, whether sailing, boating or just sitting by a lake or the ocean.

Brad was born in Woodland, CA, but spent most of his life in the Bay Area and Los Altos.

Dick was born 1917, in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He earned a BS in chemistry from University of Arkansas and a PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Colorado.

Dr. Kirk Cutler McGuire, 91, passed away November 14 after an extraordinary and long life.

He was born January 7, 1923 to Mildred Buck and Melvin McGuire in his grandfather’s house in Iowa Falls, Iowa. His grandfather was the town’s mayor. Kirk’s parents raised him and his sisters, Marilyn and Marcia, in Ames, where they ran the local tobacco shop.

James Windell Smith, a 40 year resident of Los Altos, passed away from complications after a post-surgery stroke November 6th, 2014 in Los Gatos, California.

Born on January 11, 1939 on a small ranch outside of Granbury, Texas to John Silas Smith and Mary Francis Huston “Windell” was the second of four brothers: Travis Marlin, Eddie Lee & Wesley Royce.

Howard Warner Stokes, 83, of Los Altos Hills, passed away peacefully on Nov. 6, 2014 after a long illness. He was born July 15, 1931 in Santa Monica, California, the only child of Howard Benjamin Johnstone Stokes and Josephine Warner Stokes. The family lived in West Los Angeles where Warner attended University High School, Santa Monica College and UCLA. After college he joined the Navy, receiving his wings as a U.S. Naval Aviator May 8, 1956. He served on the USS Kearsarge, a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, in 1957. In 1959, after the service, Warner joined Western Airlines, which later became Delta Airlines. He was promoted to captain in 1968 and retired in 1991.

Longtime Los Altos resident Edward Sanchez passed away on November 3, 2014 at the age of 87. Born in Hanford, California, Edward served as a Gunner’s Mate Third Class in the Navy during World War II. He went into real estate development after the war, developing hundreds of residential and commercial buildings throughout the Bay Area and beyond in his more than 50-year career.

Obituaries are difficult to write as they force you to summarize and assess a person’s life in the form of a few paragraphs. The life of William Daniel Rasdal cannot be told in a mere couple of paragraphs, for it would span a series of novels, each a series unto themselves. But I can tell you a little bit about Dan, and maybe that will suffice.

Dan Rasdal was like Gandalf. He was the old, robust wise man who kept the fellowship together. For Dan, that fellowship was his family.
