Bernerd, “Bernie”, Meseth, a forty-year resident of Los Altos, passed away November 21, 2014 following a brief illness.

He was a second-generation San Franciscan, the son of German-American parents. When his father left home during the Depression, Bernie helped support his mother and two sisters by working multiple jobs at the age of 13.

After cheating death too many times to count, Donald Yost slipped away, peacefully, on October 2, 2014, after spending 91 years traversing planet Earth. Although he struggled to communicate after his stroke in 2006, he would light up at the sight of his two sons, Jeff and Greg, his daughter-in-law Sophie, and most especially his beloved grandson, Nathan.

Sangeeta was born on October 18, 1959 in Delhi, India. She was born to Moti Sagar and Raj Kapoor and elder sister of Reena Duggal and Sonia Pawa.

Florence Sadako Hori passed peacefully on November 26, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Sacramento. She was born on Oct 2, 1920 and spent most of her early years in Colorado. She left for New York to attend school and there met her husband Tatsu Hori. She eventually came out to San Francisco and she and Tatsu finally settled in Los Altos.

Sally Ann McNees, a long-term resident of Los Altos Hills, died in peace the morning of Thursday, November 6, 2014 after surviving pancreatic cancer for over seven months.

Sally was born on April 23, 1953, in Lancaster, PA. She was adopted by Sterling and Mary Lee McNees at age 3 in Pennsylvania. In 1962 she moved with her adoptive parents and brother George to northern California, which was her primary residence for the remainder of her life.

Joan Denise Freitas, 91, of Los Altos, CA died November 22nd, 2014. Born June 28, 1923 in New York, Joan Freitas was the daughter of Michael and Anna Hickie, and loving wife of the late Albert Freitas. She is survived by her daughter, Joan M. Freitas (Brian Heikenen), son, Michael Freitas (Natalie), and niece, Joanne Schnuckel (Brian) and many nieces and nephews.

Leon Weston “Pete” Harman moved on to a better world on November 19, 2014 at 95 years of age. He was born in 1919 in Granger, Utah, the son of David and Grace Harman. Grace died of the flu soon after his birth, at which time her widowed sister, Caroline “Aunt Carrie”, took baby Pete to her home. David and Caroline were eventually wed and added Caroline’s four surviving children to the mix of Pete, his five brothers, and three sisters.

Mr. Richard Wilber James, age 89, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 23, 2014 at home in Los Altos, California. Richard, a long time resident of the city of Los Altos, was born in San Francisco on January 27, 1925. As a young man, he served in the U.S. Army during World War II, helping to entertain the troops as a video projectionist. After the war, he returned home to study electronics at the College of San Mateo and went on to have a long, successful career at Teledyne MEC.

Longtime Los Altos resident Larry Madsen passed away peacefully Nov. 19 surrounded by his family, after fighting cancer for many years.

Mr. Madsen was born in Dallas, Texas, in 1930 and moved with his family to Long Beach when he was 7 years old. He and his sister, Barbara, spent much of their time on the beach and in the waves, and he had a lifetime love of water, whether sailing, boating or just sitting by a lake or the ocean.

Dr. Kirk Cutler McGuire, 91, passed away November 14 after an extraordinary and long life.

He was born January 7, 1923 to Mildred Buck and Melvin McGuire in his grandfather’s house in Iowa Falls, Iowa. His grandfather was the town’s mayor. Kirk’s parents raised him and his sisters, Marilyn and Marcia, in Ames, where they ran the local tobacco shop.

Born on January 11, 1939 on a small ranch outside of Granbury, Texas to John Silas Smith and Mary Francis Huston “Windell” was the second of four brothers: Travis Marlin, Eddie Lee & Wesley Royce.

Howard Warner Stokes, 83, of Los Altos Hills, passed away peacefully on Nov. 6, 2014 after a long illness. He was born July 15, 1931 in Santa Monica, California, the only child of Howard Benjamin Johnstone Stokes and Josephine Warner Stokes. The family lived in West Los Angeles where Warner attended University High School, Santa Monica College and UCLA. After college he joined the Navy, receiving his wings as a U.S. Naval Aviator May 8, 1956. He served on the USS Kearsarge, a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, in 1957. In 1959, after the service, Warner joined Western Airlines, which later became Delta Airlines. He was promoted to captain in 1968 and retired in 1991.

Longtime Los Altos resident Edward Sanchez passed away on November 3, 2014 at the age of 87. Born in Hanford, California, Edward served as a Gunner’s Mate Third Class in the Navy during World War II. He went into real estate development after the war, developing hundreds of residential and commercial buildings throughout the Bay Area and beyond in his more than 50-year career.

The life of William Daniel Rasdal cannot be told in a mere couple of paragraphs, for it would span a series of novels, each a series unto themselves. But I can tell you a little bit about Dan, and maybe that will suffice.

Dan Rasdal was like Gandalf. He was the old, robust wise man who kept the fellowship together. For Dan, that fellowship was his family.

Chris was born to Eugene & Jeanine Hansen June 12, 1953 in Salt Lake City. He graduated from East High School, served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints to the Eastern States Mission, then returned to Salt Lake where he continued his education and was a Pi Kapp at the University of Utah where he graduated with a BS Degree. He met and married his sweetheart Cindy Hale on June 22, 1977 in the Salt Lake Temple.

Sargent was born in Berkeley, California on December 3, 1974 and raised mainly in Los Altos. After a short move to New Jersey, he returned to California and then moved with his family to England. Sargent attended Kingsbury Hill House and Pinewood School. He was the youngest student ever to pass the swimming test. He loved being able to ride one of the school’s horses to various historic places and take karate. Pinewood was mostly a boy’s school which made it ideal for Sargent to “muck about”.

PETER WARD

1919 – 2014

Peter (Pete) Ward, 95, passed away November 4, 2014 at his residence at Amber Grove Place surrounded by his loving family. The son of an Irish immigrant, Pete was born and raised in San Francisco, one of seven brothers and sisters who lived above the family grocery store, the Sunnyside Market. Pete met his sweetheart and his future wife Lillian of 72 years while working in the family store. He married Lillian in September 1942.

Pete is a veteran of WWII. He was in his senior year of studies in mechanical engineering at U.C. Berkeley when Pearl Harbor was attacked December 7, 1941. He and his classmates were allowed to graduate in May but were recruited immediately into the service as junior officers. Pete spent most of the next 4 years in the Pacific theatre, supervising a battleship gun repair crew aboard a destroyer escort.

Bill Mayhood remembered for decades of community service

Bill Mayhood, a longtime Los Altos resident and community volunteer, passed away Oct. 9.

Mr. Mayhood served as president of the Los Altos Chamber of Commerce and volunteered in support of several organizations, including helping with projects at the Los Altos Senior Center, adding a reading room to the Los Altos main library and participating in the annual Los Altos Festival of Lights Parade and Los Altos Arts & Wine Festival.
