JACK WYLIE

Jack Wylie, aged 89, passed away on the 3rd of October, surrounded by his family. He was the beloved husband of Malou, his wife of 52 years, and the loving father of daughter, Susan. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1924, he was a proud WWII veteran and was decorated for valor, receiving the Bronze Star.

Jack attended Fenn College in Cleveland on the GI bill, where he received his bachelor's degree in electrical engineering.

After moving to California he met Malou on a blind date.  They were married in 1962, moving from Los Angeles to Los Altos in 1969 where they lived for the next 45 years.

Suzanne Monica Dimm Specht passed Tuesday, Sept. 9th at the age of 84. Sue was born on April 21, 1930 in Portland, Oregon. After graduating from the University of Oregon in with a degree in Music, Sue taught in a little town called Clatskanie, Oregon. There she taught music to grades K-8 and lived in a boarding house. She would joke about her boarding house reach. After several years of teaching in Oregon, she moved to Menlo Park, CA where she taught second grade at Hillview Elementary School. She joined a young adult group where she met her future husband Donald Specht. Their first date was a community ski trip which led to a 54 year marriage!

Donna Halliday, 85, a longtime resident of Los Altos, passed away Friday evening, September 26, 2014, in Kirksville, Missouri, while visiting her son.

She was born on January 25, 1929, in Wichita, Kansas, the daughter of Schuyler Everett and Maude Bedigrew Clark.

Donna grew up in Kansas City, Missouri and graduated from Southeast High School, in the Class of 1946. She later attained her nursing degree from the University of Kansas, in Lawrence, Kansas and subsequently taught nursing to the younger students. While at K.U. she met her future husband, Gordon Halliday, who at the time was a second year medical student.

Our beautiful Jacqueline (Jackie) Koch passed away on September 8, 2014 at the age of 81 due to complications from Alzheimer’s.

Jackie was born in Reims, France and came to the United States not knowing any English. She worked hard to acclimate to her new surroundings and became a hair stylist in Washington, D.C. She later relocated to California where she met her “sweetheart” and love of her life, James (Jim) Koch, who predeceased her in October of 2012.

Virginia (Ginny) Grigsby of Los Altos died September 4, 2014, at home, peacefully, with her family surrounding her.  She was 85 years old.

She was born on March 27, 1929, in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, to Frank and Ruth Eck. She graduated from Green Mountain College in Poultney, Vermont. She met her husband-to-be, John, at a church picnic in 1949, and they were married in Pittsfield on July 15, 1950.

Patricia Jennings: Former Los Altos resident restored historic Paul Shoup House


Patricia Bock Jennings, known in Los Altos for her exacting efforts in restoring the historic Paul Shoup House, died unexpectedly Sept. 16 at her home in San Jose. Mrs. Jennings was 46.OBIT trisha
    Mrs. Jennings, an attorney, spearheaded the restoration project during the time her family lived in the landmark house at 500 University Ave. She retrofitted everything in the 1910-era home – from door handles to light fixtures – to reflect historical authenticity. Her efforts led to the home’s inclusion in 2011 on the National Register of Historic Places, the first such designation in Los Altos. Mrs. Jennings, who saw the project through with enthusiasm and determination, held a 100th anniversary birthday party for the house in 2010, inviting the public and the Shoup family heirs.
    Friends and family report that such passion and generosity was typical of Mrs. Jennings, born Patricia Yolanda Bock in Hoboken, N.J., in 1968. She was the older child of Charles and Irma Bock, who moved to Fairfield in 1981.
    Friends and family described Mrs. Jennings as “super smart” and “generous.” She earned degrees from UC Davis and McGeorge School of Law, the latter marked by years of service to Phi Mu.

Louis Charles Sarto, 84, died peacefully on August 21, 2014, after eight strokes. Lou was born June 6, 1930 to Norma and Guilio Sarto of Los Altos, California.

He was educated at Mountain View Union High School, class of 1948, Santa Clara University, 1949, and graduated with a BA in accounting from San Jose State University in 1955.

Lou was employed by the Adobe Creek Lodge as Social Director, by Wells Fargo Bank of San Francisco, Trust Department, and with Gemello Winery in Mountain View, as Vice President and then President of the Winery, handling retail and wholesale sales, and blending of wines.

Adolph, “Dolph”, Lund, Jr., a 52 year resident of Los Altos, California, passed away Thursday, August 28, 2014, at the age of 78. He was extremely kind hearted, giving, supportive and a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend.

Pop, as he was known to his family, is survived by his wife of 51 years, Phyllis Lund, and their three children. Son, Kevin Lund and wife Kristin; daughter Karen Lund; daughter Amy Van Ryswyk and husband Martin. Pop has three grandchildren Brandon, Brooke and Shannon.

Born in Perry, TX, Roy graduated from Sunset High School in Dallas and Texas A&M. He married Florence Devenport in March, 1937. Due to taking flying courses in college, Roy went to work as a pilot for Pan Am in 1943 and they moved to the San Francisco Bay area. He and Florence built a house in Los Altos where they lived for 56 years, and raised two sons, Michael & Stephen.

During the next 22 years, he served his fellow Pan Am pilots as a union representative with the Air Line Pilots Association and worked closely with ALPA founder David L. Behncke.

Ted Keyani passed away on August 24, 2014, in Sunnyvale, California. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Judi Oszman Keyani. Ted was born in 1927 in Yazd, Iran into a Zoroastrian family and culture. He moved with his family, mother Homayoon and father Bahram, to Tehran while in his teens and came to the United States in 1947. He attended Perkiomen Prep School in Pennsburg, Pennsylvania for a year before entering Stanford University where he completed both undergraduate studies and his medical degree. He and Judi were married in 1964 and have resided in Los Altos, California, since 1970.

After suffering a stroke in May, Jeanne Packard died August 10, 2014 at age 83. She was born in 1931 in Berlin, Germany, the only child of Emily Channel and Frank Howe Packard of Chicago, IL. Jeanne is survived by 5 great grandchildren. She was a longtime resident of Los Altos since 1980.  Jeanne was a graduate of University of Chicago Art Institute. A founder artist of Packard Art Studio of Los Altos, she also had worked as an advertising and graphic artist. From 1953 – 1963 she resided in Mexico City and became fluent in Spanish.

Bill was a loving and devoted husband to Joan for over 59 years and the adored father of Bill (Nancy), Bob (Nicole), Tom (Julie), Joanne (John (d)), Brian (Annamarie), Joe (d) (Cathy), Carol (Jim) and Kathy (Tony) and best grandfather to 21 beloved grandchildren.

It is with great sadness our family must share the passing of Mary Frances Jett on August 6, 2014 in her Los Altos home. Mary Fran was born in Hollywood, California to parents Bob and Janet Jett. She grew up in San Marino, California graduating from San Marino High school in 1964. Mary Fran attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee earning both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and her PhD in Physiology.

SARA MITTELMAN

Sara Mittelman, 97, was born May 10, 1917 and died August 15, 2014 at Menorah Medical Center. She was born in Pilica, Poland and came to the USA in 1950. Sara was a Holocaust survivor who lost her entire family during the war. She was one of the oldest survivors in the Kansas City area. She and her beloved husband, Israel Mittelman, fled to Russia where they were jailed until the war ended. They then came to Kansas City with their children Harry & Marie to start a new life.

Sara was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her family was the center of her life.

She was a member of Beth Shalom synagogue and its Sisterhood and Hadassah.  She and her husband were instrumental in starting the New American’s Club where they had many beloved friends. They had many events and fundraisers and had a wonderful time together.  Since most of them had lost all or almost all family members, they were all a big family to each other.  They led the effort to bring the second Holocaust Memorial in the US to the Kansas City area.

Community leader Peter Louis Pavlina passed away August 22 at his home after a short illness. He was born October 17, 1925 in Mountain View, CA. His father Luka immigrated in 1913 and his mother Kate Grcich in 1920. Both entered the U.S. through Ellis Island. They met in Mountain View and married in 1921. They were orchardist raising apricots, cherries and prunes in the Santa Clara Valley and peaches, pears and prunes in Yuba County.

Bob Dawson, a forty-six year resident of Los Altos, passed away in San Diego, CA, on July 14, 2014--three days after his 83rd birthday. He spent his final days in the company of his children and grandchildren.

He was born in Washtucna, WA, and served in the US Army before graduating from Gonzaga University in 1954. In 1959, he moved with his young family to California and began his career at Stanford Research Institute (now SRI International), where he was employed until his retirement.

Jane passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family August 15th, 2014. She was 95 years old.

Jane was born in Sparta, Wisconsin. Her mother died when Jane was 17 years old and she interrupted her education to return home to take care of her father and younger brother James. Jane had not yet learned to cook and she often talked about her "creations" in the kitchen, many of which involved tomato soup.  Her father was gracious and always told her it was delicious.
