Long time Los Altos resident, Dr. Alfred Hughes, died May 1st after a long illness. Dr. Hughes was born in 1927 in Maspeth, NY. He served in the US Army from 1945-6, attended Brooklyn Polytechnic University, then graduated from Reed College in Portland, OR in 1951. He went on to study medicine at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO followed by internships and residency at Cedars of Lebanon Hospital in Los Angeles, CA and Highland View Hospital in Cleveland, OH. He moved to the Bay Area in 1964 with his family and settled in Los Altos where he was on staff at El Camino Hospital before opening his own private practice in electromyography diagnostics.
Dr. Hughes was an early computer enthusiast and fully automated his medical practice in the 70s, long before that became common. He also was an avid tennis player and played for decades at the Los Altos Hills Country Club. He was very widely read and was known for the breadth and depth of his intellectual interests and curiosity. Until recently, he and his wife traveled to Ashland every summer to enjoy the Oregon Shakespeare Festival performances.
Dr. Hughes is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Else Bertelsen of Denmark, and their children Carsten and Michelle. Funeral arrangements are private. Donations may be made to NPR or any public radio station.
