JEAN ELIZABETH COOK

OBIT JeanCook

90, of Los Altos

June 26, 1923 – June 14, 2014

Jean was born to the late Seward P. Day and Faith A. Murfin in Weeping Water, Nebraska. As a teenager the family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska where Jean graduated from Lincoln High School in 1941. She attended the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, and married her high school sweetheart, Charles J. Cook, in 1945.

Their first year was spent in Memphis, Tennessee, then they returned to Lincoln where they started a family. After Charles received his PhD from the University of Nebraska, they moved to Los Altos, California in 1954. Jean was a resident of Los Altos for 59 years.

Jean was a 70 year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, charter member of P.E.O. Chapter OZ, Los Altos and a founding member of Foothills Congregational Church. She loved to travel living in Belfast, Ireland with her family from 1962 to 1963 while Charles was a visiting professor in the Physics Department at Queens University. She often accompanied her husband on trips around the world and enjoyed studying the history of countries they visited. She also delighted in studying her family genealogy and entertaining others with stories of the past.

Jean was happiest taking care of others. She was the generous matriarch of her extended family, and her welcome mat was always out. She loved to cook and entertain, and delighted in hosting family and friends in her home. In the Dominican Republic where they wintered in their golf villa, she took joy in collecting clothing and supplies for a remote village they adopted in the mountains. Jean volunteered for Friends Outside and helped establish the P.E.O. Nearly New Shop in Sunnyvale, California.

Jean is survived by her husband of 69 years, Charles, children Nancy Cook of Los Altos, Sally Oliver (Kenneth) of Reno, Nevada, three grandchildren, five great grandchildren, sister Maryann Sanregret (George, recently deceased), brother Thomas E. Day (Mary), and numerous nieces and nephews. Children, Charles and Suzanne, preceded her in death. The family would like to thank Teresa Carr and staff for their loyal and faithful care during the final chapter of Jean’s life. A memorial service will be held at Foothills Congregational Church in Los Altos on Tuesday, September 2, at 11:00 am. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to The P.E.O. Foundation, Nearly New Scholarship Fund, c/o 47 Solana Drive, Los Altos, CA 94022.
