81, Gulfport, FL, June 5. Born at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco to Maurice and Elizabeth Peterson, they lived in the Marina District, then Palo Alto where he attended the one-room Channing Elementary School, finally settling in Los Altos when he was 10. He graduated from Mountain View High School (51, Honors) and studied at San Jose State.
In 1953 he joined the US Army, stationed in Japan. Upon returning home in 1955, he attended University of California, Riverside (59 BA History, Honors), where he was editor of the Highlander student newspaper, and also met Carol Patteson, whom he married in 1960, remaining happily wed for nearly 54 years. After UCR, he attended Stanford Graduate Business School. Finding more inspiration in tales of times past, he earned his MA in History at Princeton.
