Leonard F. Robinson was born on September 17, 1915 in Morrill, Kansas. He moved to San Francisco in 1922, growing up in the city and graduating from Lowell High at the height of the Great Depression. He became a carpenter like his father, and then went on to be the first in his family to attend college, graduating with honors from the Engineering School at UC Berkeley. He founded the engineering firm L.F. Robinson and Associates, now RMJ and Associates, and had a long career designing major structures in the city and beyond. The capstone building of his career was St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco, completed in 1971.
In 1950, the family moved to Los Altos, and five years later to his home of 58 years in Los Altos Hills. A man of many interests and talents, he touched many lives with his kindness and generosity and made friends all over the world in his extensive travels teaching ballroom dancing with his beloved wife, Lee, who passed away in 2000. Leonard Robinson passed away peacefully on October 25, 2013 in his own home at the age of 98, and will be sorely missed by his five children, eight grand children, four great-grandchildren, and anyone who was lucky enough to have met him. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to CCO (ca-cco.org), for their work with people with developmental disabilities.
