Sylvia Larriva Swyryd passed away at her Los Altos home surrounded by family on August 18, 2013 at the age of 79 after a strong 4-year battle with multiple myeloma.
Born in Tucson, AZ to Evelyn and Genaro Amaldo Larriva on June 25, 1934, Sylvia graduated with a BA from the University of Arizona. After graduation, Sylvia travelled around the world before moving to the Bay Area, where she worked as a middle school teacher. Sylvia met the love of her life, Miroslav Swyryd, at a Palo Alto Unitarian Church social where Miro was the bass player in the band. Their first date was on a Sierra club hike in 1965, and they married within the year. Their marriage lasted 45 years until his passing in 2010.
Sylvia was passionate about politics, mind puzzles, music and singing, and animals, especially her cats. She is survived by her daughter Lyn Swyryd-Smith and son-in-law Michael Smith, grandchildren Sophia, Trevor, and Katarina, all of Palo Alto, CA; brother Lionel Larriva of Tucson, AZ; sister Victoria Larriva of Bisbee, AZ; and her sister-in-law, Elizabeth Swyryd also of Palo Alto. Sylvia was predeceased by her husband and her brother Michael Larriva of Phoenix, AZ.
At her request, a celebration of her life will be held at her home on September 6 after a private inurnment at Alta Mesa Memorial Park, Palo Alto. In lieu of flowers, donations to Unicef, League of Women Voters, or Palo Alto Animal Services are preferred.
