Roderick “Rick” Davies passed away peacefully on July 11, 2013 at the age of 62.
Born in Dayton, Ohio, Rick showed an early aptitude for engineering. As a child, he once took apart his family’s washing machine and made a lathe from the motor. He attended the University of Cincinnati, where he graduated at the top of his electrical engineering class. Rick met his future wife Gina in 1972 while they were both working summer jobs at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. When he died, they had been married for 39 years.
Rick obtained his PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1977 and an MBA from Southern Methodist University in 1986. He had a long and successful career in the semiconductor industry, working at Xerox PARC (Palo Alto, CA), Texas Instruments (Dallas, TX), International Rectifier (El Segundo, CA), Vishay Siliconix (Santa Clara, CA) and several smaller companies. He was a committed member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
Rick and Gina moved to Los Altos in 1999, where they became active members of Los Altos United Methodist Church. In the winter months, Rick would take long walks with the family dog Buddy; in the summer months, he swam laps in the backyard pool. Always data-driven, he recorded his mileage carefully, totaling over 750 miles walking and 60 miles swimming most years. Other interests included jazz music, carefully brewed espresso, and home improvement projects.
Rick was a warm, loving and devoted family man. He is survived by Gina, their daughters Kimberly and Carolyn, his brother Tim, and his son-in-law Jack. A memorial celebration for Rick was held on July 20 at Los Altos United Methodist Church. Donations in his memory may be made to Los Altos Relay for Life.
