JOSEFA EVELINE (EVI) BARNETT

1929 – 2013

A long time resident of Los Altos

Evi was only 9 when Germany annexed Austria in 1938. She was one of the 10,000 fortunate Kinder Transport children who were welcomed in England and placed in foster homes, hostels or farms. Evi received the equivalent of a college education and after the war, came to the United States, sponsored by an uncle in Cleveland. Evi’s father died in Austria. Her mother and brother made their way to San Francisco where Evi joined them. She met Melvin Barnett and they were married in 1951 and for the next 62 years were constant companions. Evi loved to dance and travel. During a trip to Vienna, she reunited with other kinder transport children and has kept in touch with them over the years. Evi’s illness began about 5 years ago and the doctors were unable to find the cause. Evi passed on after a short stay in the hospital. Private services were held at the Alta Mesa Cemetery under the direction of Sinai Memorial Chapel, Redwood City.
