Los Altos resident Michael Anthony Odello, 92, passed away April 3, 2013 at El Camino Hospital after suffering a stroke at home.
Michael was born in San Francisco, and shortly after moved with his parents, Anna and Antonio, and his older siblings, Antoinette, Rose, and Frances to Bagnasco, Italy. There he spent his childhood on the family farm, where his younger siblings, Giovanni, Anna, Nancy, and Fiorino were born.
Michael returned to the U.S at the age of 18 and worked at a nursery raising orchids in San Francisco. He entered the army in 1942 and fought in Germany during WWII as a sergeant with the 310th Infantry Regiment. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for heroic achievement in 1945 when he, with three other men, captured 32 enemy soldiers in Angelberg, Germany.
Michael met Emma Mercurio at a picnic in San Francisco, and they married in 1951 and had three daughters, Marilyn, Linda, and Annette. They were stationed in Spokane, Berlin, and later at the Presidio in San Francisco where he served as a Master Sergeant and chief food inspector.
After retiring from the army in 1966, Michael pursued his dream of owning and managing real estate. He obtained his real estate license, attended San Jose State University, and worked as a real estate agent and broker in the Santa Clara area.
Michael was a jack-of-all-trades and physically active throughout his life, making home repairs even in his 90’s. And he insisted on climbing ladders, despite protests by his daughters, often enlisting the aid of his wife of 62 years as an accomplice.
He was the rock of the family. His humor, warmth and wisdom will be sorely missed by his wife, daughters and their spouses, his siblings, grandchildren, family members, friends and business associates.
Services were held on April 20th. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in his name to a charity of your choice.
