Resident of Los Altos
Katharine “Kate” Hangauer passed away peacefully, at age 98 and a half on July 9, surrounded by her family.
Kate was born in Spokane, Washington in 1913. She married Jack Hangauer in 1937 and they began an odyssey that took them from Washington State to Los Altos where Kate resided for the past 50 years. She loved her adopted town and was active in a variety of social and community groups including the Aurora Singers, the Los Altos History House, Children’s Home Society, the Discovery Shop, and Saint Nicholas parish.
She spent her last ten years at Bridgepoint in Los Altos where she had a steady gig playing the piano for the resident sing-along and calling Bingo. She volunteered to work during elections and as recently as two months ago spent a 12 hour shift signing in voters. Kate loved the energy and the friendliness of the Bridgepoint staff and her fellow residents.
Kate was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jack, in 1972. She is survived by an adoring family including daughters Sue, Marney, Jeanne, sons Zack and Rob, sons and daughters-in-law Terry, Stuart, Taina and Susan, 15 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Kate was an extraordinary woman whose kindness and generosity touched all those who had the good fortune to know her. She was an inspiration to all of us. She will be missed, but never forgotten.
Memorial services were held on July 14th at St. Nicholas Church in Los Altos.
