Our dear dad, grandfather, son, brother and friend passed away from health complications on June 27 at the age of 90. Sheldon A. Block was born April 26, 1922 in the great city of Chicago to Eva and Maurice Block. He met and married his high school sweetheart, Davia Geliebter, who preceded him in death, and was married to our mom for 66 years. Sheldon was a talented engineer and photographer. He moved his family to Northern California in 1961 when he took a job with Lockheed in Sunnyvale, California. However, his love and passion were photography and he was the owner and founder of Sheldon of Los Altos. He was a Master of Photography winning many awards and taking thousands of pictures of brides over his 40 years in Los Altos. The studio is still thriving today and proudly displaying his name.
Sheldon loved all kinds of sports and was a San Francisco 49er season ticket holder for over 30 years. One of his favorite pictures was one that was taken with Joe Montana at the studio. He also loved to garden and most of all loved his family. Dad taught us about passion, strong work ethics and the importance of loyalty. His humor and love for life was evident until the last moment of his life. Sheldon traveled the world with Davia and they always returned to Hawaii, which was their favorite location.
Dad always had a noise maker in his pocket and would beep everyone’s nose no matter what age. Known as Uncle Shel to so many, he always went out of his way to make you smile and make you feel part of the family.
Sheldon was preceded in death by his father, Maurice Block, mother Eva Block (Wolf), younger brother Robert Block and his beloved wife Davia Block (Geliebter).
Dad is survived by his loving daughters Sharon Block Gantman (Mel), Marsha Block Colendich (Barry) and his son Steve Block (Kim). Though he loved us unconditionally, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought so much joy in his life. His grandchildren are Michael Gantman (Lonee), Myles Colendich (Lindy), Januari Colendich Abbruzzese (Steve), Travis Block, and Pam Block Hargrave (Sam). His great-grandchildren include Hayden, Tanner and Riley Abbruzzese, Indee Gantman and Lucas Colendich. Dad’s life should be honored with joy not sorrow as he lived it to the fullest and as he always told us – “never sweat the small things.” In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations to the Guide Dogs for the Blind, his favorite charity, would be appreciated. Per Dad’s wishes there will be no services. Mom and Dad are together again for all eternity. Thanks for all the memories, Sheldon, we love you and you will be missed but never forgotten.
