Our dear father Max Belfor passed away on May 29th after a short stay at the Palo Alto VA. He was 94. Max was preceded in death by his wife Bettie in 2002. Max is survived by his two sons Jeff (Alison) and David (Jan), grandchildren Heather, Lauren and Ryan and his little dog Beckie.
Max was raised in an orphanage in San Francisco where he met his future bride Bettie. They were married shortly after Max returned from his five years of service in the Army during WWII. Max served in the Pacific earning the Distinguished Service Cross. Max and Bettie moved to Los Altos in 1950.
In 1947 Max along with an army buddy opened Christopher’s Clothes for Men on the corner of Murphy and Washington in Sunnyvale. They sold a lot of Levi’s to the field workers off the back of a truck. Together they ran this business for 25 years. Max went on to open Pants Plus and built this business to include 4 locations. He sold Pants Plus in 1977.
In 1987 Max opened a clothing store for men on State St. called M Belfor. He finally chose to retire at the age of 75 and closed up the shop in 1992.
Max was well known in both Sunnyvale and Los Altos. He enjoyed tennis and was even out hitting balls at the age of 87. Max was known as a kind and generous man who greeted everyone with a big smile. He was often in town with his little toy poodle Beckie. Dad will be greatly missed by his family and many friends. We laid Dad to rest on June 5th at Gates of Heaven in Los Altos with a full military service. As bugler played taps the sun came through the clouds. It was a lovely day. He is once again united with his dear wife.
We have chosen the Wounded Warrior Project for donations in Maxs name.
