1920 – 2012
Vivian Koehler died peacefully in Palo Alto on Friday, April 13, 2012. She lived with grace and independence, and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. Vivian was preceded into death by her husband, Earl, in 2003, and by her daughter, Andrea, in 1996. She is survived by her son, Allan, and her daughter, Marcia, with her husband John Knutson.
Vivian was born in Watertown, South Dakota on April 29, 1920. She met Earl in high school, where they both played the violin in the orchestra. After graduation, Vivian attended Mankato State Teacher’s College. Shortly after marrying Earl in 1940, she became a pilot under a Civilian Air Authority scholarship program where she ranked the highest among all applicants. Vivian and Earl moved to California and lived in Palo Alto for 13 years before making Los Altos their home for 45 years. After Earl’s retirement, they enjoyed many trips all over the world and studied other cultures.
With a lifetime love of music, Vivian spent many years singing with the California Bach Choir and with the choir at Trinity Lutheran Church, where she was a member for over 58 years. She loved helping people and volunteered at the Stanford Medical Auxiliary for over 10 years. Vivian also loved her garden and spent many happy hours there. One of her biggest joys in life was playing bridge with her friends at the Cosmopolitan Club and elsewhere. She continued to play bridge until just a few days before her death.
A Memorial Service for Vivian is planned at Trinity Lutheran Church in Palo Alto for Saturday, June 9th at 1:00 pm. Everyone is welcome.
