Medical school student earns UC scholarship

Los Altos resident Kristen Lavelle, a graduate of Mountain View High School, received the UC Riverside Medical School Founders’ Scholarship at the school’s White Coat Ceremony Aug. 8. The ceremony recognizes students’ entry into the medical profession as each slips into the profession’s traditional white coat. Lavelle is a member of the UC Riverside Class of 2018.

Lavelle graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from UC Berkeley. Her parents – Caroline Lavelle of Los Altos and Joe Lavelle of Saratoga – attended the ceremony.

LAH resident receives Scouting’s highest honor

Longtime Los Altos Hills resident William Stark Jr. recently received the Boy Scouts of America’s highest honor, the Silver Buffalo Award.

Each year, the Boy Scouts honor several individuals nationwide who have demonstrated a lifetime of extraordinary service to youth either through direct service to a youth agency or through actions affecting youth. In the 88-year history of the Silver Buffalo Award, only 741 have been bestowed. Recipients include 14 U.S. presidents, former First Lady Nancy Reagan, baseball legend Yogi Berra, Bill Gates and Gen. Colin Powell.

Rangan

Los Altos Hills resident Apoorva Rangan won first place in the High School Flute Soloist competition during the National Flute Association’s annual convention, held Aug. 7-10 in Chicago.

Rangan performs with the San Francisco Symphony’s Youth Orchestra program and has held principal flute positions with the California Youth Symphony and the San Jose Youth Symphony.

Maj. Benjamin Closs, back turned to the camera, leads a Marine Corps training exercise Aug. 3.

Los Altos native Maj. Benjamin Closs is currently serving as the intelligence deputy with the I Marine Expeditionary Brigade.

Closs led participants Aug. 3 in a large-scale exercise at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms. The exercise involved strengthening relationships with allies while ensuring that the Marine brigade could rapidly respond to crises around the globe.

Local flutist takes award


Los Altos resident Apoorva Rangan won first place in the High School Flute Soloist competition during the National Flute Association’s annual convention, held Aug. 7-10 in Chicago.

The National Flute Association, founded in 1972, is the largest flute organization in the world. It comprises approximately 5,000 members from more than 50 countries.
