Mountain View High School graduate Karen Pitsenbarger Krejcha, a mother with autism who has two sons on the autism spectrum, won the 2013 Washington State Jefferson Award in recognition of her public service and volunteerism.
Krejcha, a resident of Washington state, is founder and executive director of the nonprofit Autism Empowerment, based in Vancouver, Wash.
She received international recognition last year as an accomplished woman on the autism spectrum when she was selected a 2012 Global and Regional Asperger Syndrome Partnership Distinguished Spectrumite Medal winner.
Student advances in American Legion contest
After winning the state oratorical contest two months earlier, Los Altos resident Kate Park, a junior at Menlo School, represented California at the American Legion’s 76th National High School Oratorical Contest, a constitutional speech contest held April 19-21 in Indianapolis.
After winning in the quarterfinals, Park advanced to the semifinals and earned a $3,000 scholarship.
