Scouting News

Lance Takata, Nick Lillie, Kelby Senter and Austen Barker received recognition Sunday at a Court of Honor ceremony at Christ Episcopal Church in Los Altos. Los Altos Mayor Jarrett Fishpaw, an Eagle Scout, participated in the ceremony.

They are among 177 Troop 30 Boy Scouts in the past 50 years who have earned the highest rank. In the course of their experiences with Troop 30, the Eagle Scouts have developed life and leadership skills and have supported charitable organizations through thousands of community service hours.

To earn their Eagle awards, the four Scouts managed and coordinated community service projects that involved the efforts of many volunteers and took more than 1,000 hours to complete.

• For his Eagle project, Takata, a Los Altos resident and senior at Homestead High School, refurbished the San Jose Flycasters casting ponds at Los Gatos County Park.

He and his volunteers spent more than 120 hours replacing the base of the announcement board, planting 14 oleander bushes and extending irrigation to the new plants.

• Lillie, a Los Altos resident and senior at Mountain View High School, led a team of family, friends and Scouts who planned and constructed a 12-foot-by-10-foot shed and cement slab for the Mountain View High baseball team’s new practice field.

Lillie and his volunteers invested nearly 500 hours to provide the team with storage space.

• Senter, a Palo Alto resident and freshman at Gunn High School, led a team of volunteers in the design and construction of two sets of recycling, compost and trash stations for Gunn High. The project took 150 hours to complete.

• Barker, a Los Altos resident and senior at Homestead High, helped Pacific Autism Center for Education with backyard cleanup and renovation of a home for adults with severe autism.

Barker and volunteers spent nearly 300 hours clearing overgrown plants, building and installing a raised planter bed, installing a lighted path, repairing the existing shade structure and planting new plants.

Troop 30 was chartered in 1957. There are approximately 80 Scouts in the troop and 20 adult leaders. Forty Scouts in Troop 30 have achieved their Eagle Scout rank in the past five years.
