"Other Desert Cities" makes regional debut in Mtn. View

Kandis Chappell reprises her role as Polly Wyeth in TheatreWorks’ regional premiere of “Other Desert Cities.”

TheatreWorks is slated to present the regional premiere of the Broadway hit “Other Desert Cities” through Sept. 15 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro St.

Written by Jon Robin Baitz, “Cities” won the 2011 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New Off-Broadway Play and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in 2012.

Richard Seer directs the play, co-produced with The Old Globe in San Diego.

“Cities” is a portrait of a prominent family and its very public fall from grace. It centers on novelist Brooke Wyeth, who returns home to Palm Springs for the holidays with her latest manuscript – one she won’t show her parents. Brooke’s brother is a reality-show producer, her dad a movie actor turned politician and her mother a 1960s-era comedy writer turned socialite. Now long-buried secrets threaten to put the picture-perfect family back on the tabloid pages.

Broadway and regional theater veterans Kandis Chappell and James Sutorius star as Brooke’s parents, Polly and Lyman Wyeth. Chappell, who also played the role in April’s co-production at The Old Globe, has appeared on Broadway in “Pride’s Crossing,” “Rumors” and “Getting Away with Murder.” Sutorius has appeared on Broadway in “The Farnsworth Invention,” “Conversations with My Father,” “The Changing Room,” “Hamlet,” “The Cherry Orchard” and “The November People.”

Kate Turnbull, making her TheatreWorks debut, plays Brooke. She has appeared Off-Broadway in “Painting Churches” and “Passion Play.”

Julia Brothers returns to the TheatreWorks stage as Polly’s eccentric sister Silda Grauman, and Rod Brogan makes his TheatreWorks debut as Brooke’s brother Trip.

This is the second time a Baitz play has become a Pulitzer Prize finalist; the first was “A Fair Country” in 1996. He created the TV series “Brothers & Sisters,” which ran for five seasons on ABC. He is also an American Academy of Arts and Letters Award winner.

“Cities” contains mature language.

Performances are scheduled 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays, 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays, 2 and/or 8 p.m. Saturdays and 2 and/or 7 p.m. Sundays.

Tickets are $19-$73. A $6 convenience fee will be added to online and telephone orders.

For tickets and more information, call 463-1960 or visit theatreworks.org
