Closing the ‘Damn’

David Allen/Special to the Town Crier
Mr. Applegate (Jeff Clarke) watches protégé Lola (Jen Wheatonfox) in Foothill’s “Damn Yankees.”

Foothill Music Theatre is scheduled to present “Damn Yankees” through Sunday in Los Altos Hills.

The Tony Award-winning musical, which debuted on Broadway nearly 60 years ago, is a classic tale of baseball and love – and the high stakes a player risks to help his team get a shot in the big leagues. The play is based on Douglass Wallop’s novel “The Year the Yankees Lost the Pennant.”

When baseball fanatic Joe Boyd sells his soul to the devil, he has only one request – the opportunity to lead his favorite team, the flailing Washington Senators, to victory against the New York Yankees. Joe transforms from middle-aged zero to baseball hero Joe Hardy, reinvigorating his hapless team members into champions. But deals with the devil come with a price – in exchange for new glory, Joe overlooks the value of his old life until it is almost too late.

Los Altos native Tom Gough directs the production, supported by Catherine Snider (music direction) and Katie O’Bryon (choreography).

The musical stars Jeff Clarke (as Mr. Applegate), Jen Wheatonfox (Lola) and Dan Mitchell (Joe Hardy). Featured cast members include Richard Lewis (Van Buren), Caitlyn Lawrence-Papp (Gloria), Ryan Henry (Commissioner Lynch), Matt Tipton (Joe Boyd) and Mary Melnick (Meg Boyd).

The production is held in the Smithwick Theatre at Foothill College, 12345 S. El Monte Road.

Performances are slated 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $12-$28; parking is $3.

For tickets and more information, call 949-7360 or visit foothillmusicals.com.
