The Palo Alto Philharmonic Association has scheduled “Concert IV,” the final orchestral concert of its 25th season, 8 p.m. Saturday – with a pre-concert talk slated 7:30 p.m. – at Cubberley Theatre, 4000 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto.
The performance will include three works in different styles: Leonard Bernstein’s “Three Dance Episodes” (1944), Lee Actor’s “Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra” (2011) and Ludwig van Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 (1808).
Bernstein’s “Episodes” is based on his musical “On the Town,” which in turn was based on his earlier ballet “Fancy Free.” It reflects three musical styles: cool jazz, dreamy ballads and low-down blues.
Guitarist Marc Teicholz will be the soloist in Actor’s “Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra.”
Actor is the philharmonic’s composer-in-residence and assistant conductor.
Teicholz, a faculty member at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, won first prize at the International Guitar Foundation of America Competition. He has performed in Europe, Asia and the Americas.
The concert will conclude with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C minor.
Tickets are $10-$20.
