‘Rosencrantz and Guildenstern’ closes Sunday in Los Altos Hills

The Foothill College Theatre Arts production of “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” is scheduled to close Sunday in Los Altos Hills.

The first play by Tom Stoppard – who has won Tony and Academy awards – “Rosencrantz” is the comedic tale of “Hamlet,” as told from the worm’s-eye view of two bewildered minor characters. But Foothill’s version takes a contemporary spin, reset by director Bruce McLeod against the backdrop of the Occupy movement versus the country’s 1 percent.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are almost incidental to the action of Shakespeare’s classic work, making only a brief appearance. Their fate is recited near the conclusion of “Hamlet,” with the line from which Stoppard takes his title.

Recast in Stoppard’s version as a Shakespearean Laurel and Hardy, they bicker, debate and play pointless games, while Hamlet, Gertrude, Ophelia, Claudius and other characters wander through with barely walk-on roles in Stoppard’s topsy-turvy play.

The cast features Warren Wernick (as Rosencrantz), Jacob Marker (Guildenstern), Tyler Della (Hamlet), Jeremy Ryan (Claudius), Katie Ruppeert (Gertrude), Joshua Messick (Polonius), Chloe Aknin (Ophelia), John Musgrave (The Player) and Nick Mandracchia (Horatio). Other cast members include Ivette Deltoro, Zalette Gomes, Madeleine Noriega, Trina Rafie, Danraj Rajasansi, Patrick Ross, Julia Rotakhina, Pratiksha Shah, Max Sorg, Erin Southard, Aisha Tanyeri, Lydia Tuan, Mikey Weiland, Jake Weissman-Sharer, Deanna Woodman and Charnnee Young.

Shows are scheduled 7:30 p.m. Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday at the Lohman Theatre at Foothill College, 12345 S. El Monte Road.

Tickets are $10-$18. Parking is $3.
