"Pitmen Painters" premieres

Photo By: Tracy Martin/Special to the Town Crier
Photo Tracy Martin/Special To The Town Crier Dan Hiatt, Jackson Davis, Patrick Jones and James Carpenter star in the West Coast premiere of Lee Hall’s “The Pitmen Painters.” The TheatreWorks production runs through Feb. 12.

TheatreWorks’ West Coast premiere of “The Pitmen Painters” is scheduled to run through Feb. 12 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, 500 Castro St.

The comedic play is from Lee Hall, writer of the hit film and musical “Billy Elliot.”

“Painters” centers on four miners – George, Jimmy, Harry and Oliver – who decide to sign up for an art appreciation class and are disappointed when the seemingly stuffy Professor Lyon shows up to teach it.

After a few false starts – and impertinent remarks – Lyon realizes his pupils would better appreciate art through experience rather than book learning. The professor drops the art history lessons and encourages the men to put their thoughts on canvas, with extraordinary results.

As the upper echelon of English society turns its eyes toward the grubby group of men and their awe-inspiring work, the miners-cum-artists learn to assert themselves in the face of class prejudice.

The cast includes Paul Whitworth (as Professor Lyon), James Carpenter (George), Jackson Davis (Jimmy), Dan Hiatt (Harry) and Patrick Jones (Oliver). Leslie Martinson directs.

Performances are scheduled 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Wednesdays; 8 p.m. Thursdays and Fridays; 2 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Feb. 12; and 7 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $19-$69.

For advance tickets and more information, call 463-1960 or visit www.theatreworks.org.
