As snow falls in South Lake Tahoe, the ski season opens with more room at the inns for pets.
You’ve heard of doggie bags – now the hospitality business has invented the doggie welcome wagon.
Clé Hospitality’s Avalon Lodge, a contemporary 20-room getaway near South Lake Tahoe’s Heavenly ski resort, for example, now offers complimentary pet welcome baskets featuring pet sheets, towels, tennis balls, poop bags and two or three bones – goodies to keep Fido happy.
As a courtesy for those with allergies, Avalon Lodge earmarks certain first-floor rooms as pet-friendly, charging a $20 per stay flat rate supplement. That covers the cost of extra cleaning for dander and hair.
Avalon Lodge, a short walk to the Heavenly ski resort gondola, offers a continental breakfast and a Jacuzzi, among other amenities.
Rates for a king room with a fireplace start at $135 a night. Winter specials include a champagne romance package and “Stars, Strings, and Sipping” evenings for $549 for two nights.
The Lodge rents chalets and condos for bigger groups. Clé Hospitality also runs The Historian Inn in Carson Valley, Nevada.

Snow globes with Santa
The Heavenly Holidays family festival runs Friday through Dec. 31 at the Heavenly ski resort and features ice skating shows, ice sculptors, carolers and local artists.
Just in time for the Transportation Security Administration’s updated regulations allowing certain snow globes on planes, Heavenly Holidays offers children the opportunity to have their photos taken with Santa in a 16-foot giant snow globe.
Admission is free.
