St. Francis High graduate Jonathan Garrick went as far as the quarterfinals of last week’s 102nd California Amateur Championship at Monterey Peninsula Country Club.
Garrick, an Atherton resident entering his sophomore year at UCLA, fell to Matt Hansen of Los Osos in Friday’s quarterfinals. Hansen prevailed 4-and-2 in the match-play round.
Garrick jumped to a 1-up lead early in the round before losing it, but he regained the advantage with a birdie on the par-5 ninth hole. Hansen rallied on the back nine, taking five holes – four with birdies – to win.
Garrick entered the event seeded 32nd. He beat Xander Schauffele (San Diego) and John Catlin (Gold River) to reach the quarters.
