How to climb Shasta
REI in Mountain View is scheduled to host a free digital presentation, “Climbing Mount Shasta: Tips for the Novice and the Expert,” 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday. Chris Carr, REI’s Shasta climbing guide, will discuss the major routes to the peak (including Avalanche Gulch, Casaval Ridge, Sargeant’s Ridge and Hotlum Glacier) and share his expertise on mountaineering gear and technique, best times to climb, U.S. Forest Service regulations and mountain weather. Registration for the Sequoia Century Bicycle Ride – scheduled June 2, beginning at Foothill College in Los Altos Hills – is under way. Organized by the Western Wheelers Bicycle Club, the event offers three routes through the mountains to the coast and back (100 and 200 kilometers and 100 miles) and another through Saratoga, Los Altos Hills and Portola Valley (50 miles). Spring hoops camp
Spartans Sports Camp’s Spring Break Basketball Camp is scheduled 9 a.m. to noon April 8-12 at Mountain View High. It is open to boys and girls in grades 4-8. Led by Mountain View coaches and alumni, the fast-paced camp will focus on shooting, ball handling and defense. Campers will get a chance to use the school’s new shooting machine. Cost is $195.
