Lightning interfered with the MVLA Lightning’s goal of advancing to the Elite Clubs National League Finals.
Playing in last month’s regional tournament, the under-17 girls team from the Mountain View Los Altos Soccer Club trailed Lonestar (Austin, Tex.) 1-0 in its third match when it was called with several minutes remaining due to lightning strikes in Aurora, Colo. Lonestar went on to win the regional and advance to the national finals, while the Lightning’s season came to an end.
“It was too bad because we had an outstanding weekend (and we’re) just really bummed we didn’t get to finish the last game,” coach Erin Montoya said.
The Lightning opened the regional with a 3-0 shutout of Carolina Elite (Greenville, S.C.) behind goals from Fatmata Kamara, Gabriella Kaplan and Gabrielle Matulich, then tied Southern California Blues (Orange County) 1-1.
“The team played great,” Montoya said. “It was an emotional weekend because it was the last event before some of our seniors leave for college.”
The Lightning’s lineup includes players from several local high schools, including Los Altos, St. Francis and Gunn. Many of the players have been on the team since they were in the under-8 division. In 2010, they won the US Youth Soccer national championship.
