Coach Dave Winn wasn’t going to leave Palo Alto High – where he took the girls volleyball program to new heights – for just any job. But when the position at Mountain View High became available due to M. Anthony Chen’s resignation, Winn couldn’t resist applying for it.
The coach lives within walking distance of Mountain View High.
“It’s time for me to balance my family life with my coaching and work life,” said Winn, married with two children. “It’s the perfect time to do this.”
Interviewed by Mountain View High athletic director Shelley Smith Thursday morning, Winn said he was offered the job that afternoon.
“I guess timing is everything,” Smith said. “We are excited to have him and believe it’s a win-win, as he gets close to home and we get an excellent coach with a solid résumé and proven results.”
In his eight years at Paly, Winn guided the Vikings to a pair of state titles, two Central Coast Section championships (in four finals appearances) and seven league crowns. He has garnered a slew of coaching awards – from the league to state levels.
Winn, who previously coached at Los Altos High and Pinewood School, takes over a Mountain View team that tied for last place in the Santa Clara Valley Athletic League De Anza Division in 2013.
“They had a rough year, but they have a lot of potential,” he said of the Spartans.
Winn’s predecessor, Chen, said he stepped down because his wife is expecting their first child soon.
