McConnell leads Cal Poly in kills in her senior season

Moving back to the position she played so well at Mountain View High, Megan McConnell thrived at outside hitter on the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo women’s volleyball team last fall.

The 6-foot-1 senior led the Mustangs in kills, earned Big West Conference Player of the Week honors and was twice named Cal Poly Student-Athlete of the Week.

“I think this was definitely my best season,” McConnell said. “I hadn’t played outside hitter since my freshman year, because I redshirted and then got converted to middle blocker for two years. I had matured a lot since freshman year, so I finally felt like I was making a bigger impact, both as a player and a leader.”

McConnell totaled 333 kills – 69 more than the team’s second-best player in this category – and her 281 digs ranked third on the squad.

As far as numbers go, however, McConnell was most concerned with wins – which weren’t easy to come by during her college career. Cal Poly posted only one winning season while she was on the team.

The Mustangs went 12-17 this season, but their fifth-place finish in conference exceeded expectations.

“We didn’t have too many big wins over the course of my career, but this year we opened conference play with sweeps of Long Beach and Irvine,” McConnell said. “We were projected to finish eighth in conference, so those wins shocked a lot of people.”

The lack of continuity probably hindered Cal Poly in recent years – McConnell played for three coaches during her time there – but she and her fellow seniors persevered.

“I’m most proud of how my class finished our senior year,” she said. “The three of us completed five years of service and never gave up.”

McConnell, on track to graduate in the spring with a degree in business, already has a job lined up.

“I’ve signed an offer to work full time for eBay Inc. After graduation,” she said. “I don’t plan on playing anymore (volleyball), but I plan on coaching and staying involved that way.”
