Local parishes address realignment
Bishop Patrick J. McGrath of the Catholic Diocese of San Jose reported that Los Altos parishes St. Nicholas and St. William are scheduled for restructuring to eliminate unnecessary duplication and allow closer collaboration.
The realignment, proposed for July 1, would continue the churches as separate entities served by a single pastor and parochial vicar. Each would maintain a separate legal identity, including name, buildings, canonical rights, bank accounts, books, financial assets and obligations.
The communities have already shared leadership and collaborated for more than 10 years unofficially in areas such as the Faith Formation and Youth Ministry, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, the Stephen Ministry and the Lunch Bunch.
The churches’ current pastors – Father Larry Percell of St. Nicholas and Father Chris Bransfield of St. William – have scheduled public meetings to discuss the announcement and provide an opportunity for parishioners to ask questions and share suggestions before the realignment is completed. Consultant John Reid will moderate the discussions.
The St. Nicholas meeting is scheduled 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at the church, 473 Lincoln Ave. The St. William Parish meeting is slated 7 p.m. Feb. 24 in the church’s Parish Hall, 611 S. El Monte Ave.
