Les Besser of Los Altos is among a group of prominent engineers concerned about American students’ lagging interests – and success – in math and science. U.S. students currently rank low among the industrialized countries of the world.
The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Life Member Group has scheduled a presentation, “Motivating Our Students to Become Engineers: How to Make It Happen,” 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 13 at the Santa Clara County Office of Education, 1290 Ridder Park Drive, San Jose.
K-8 teachers who already receive assistance from volunteer engineers in their classrooms will relate some of the positive impacts the engineers have made. The groups who organize the programs and train the volunteers will explain the work. Volunteers will discuss the results they have achieved and the satisfaction received by participating.
The forum is open to anyone with a scientific background concerned about the lack of interest in mathematics and science among young students.
Admission is free. Breakfast, lunch and refreshments will be provided.
