MVLA Speaker Series features film screening

The Mountain View Los Altos Parent Education Speaker Series has scheduled a screening of “The Mask You Live In” 6:30 p.m. March 10 in Los Altos High School’s Eagle Theater, 201 Almond Ave.

“The Mask You Live In,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last month, examines how America’s narrow definition of masculinity is harming boys, men and society at large. Research shows that boys in the U.S. are more likely than girls to be diagnosed with a behavior disorder, prescribed stimulant medications, fail out of school, binge drink, commit a violent crime and/or take their own lives.

Loyola K-Kids continue eyeglasses drive

The Loyola School K-Kids Club, sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Los Altos, will attempt to set a club record during its ninth annual “Share Old Spectacles” drive. The students have set a goal of collecting 1,000 pairs of eyeglasses.

The K-Kids Club, comprising second- through sixth-graders, has collected more than 10,000 pairs of glasses over the years with the help of the public and local storeowners who offer space for collection buckets.

Mentor Tutor Connection seeks volunteers

Mentor Tutor Connection, a nonprofit group that provides mentors and tutors for local students, has scheduled a volunteer information event and open house noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 11 in the Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District Office, 1299 Bryant Ave., Mountain View.

Teens and their volunteer adult mentors do everything from bowling to hiking, cooking and going to movies. Primarily they talk – and listen – to one another. The relationships are designed to help struggling students build self-esteem and find positive direction in their lives.

MVLA Speaker Series hosts teen wellness panel

The Mountain View Los Altos Parent Education Speaker Series is scheduled to present a panel discussion, “Helping Your Teen Make Wise Choices,” 7 p.m. Jan. 15 in Los Altos High School’s Eagle Theater, 201 Almond Ave.

Panelists will include Seth Ammerman, M.D., adolescent medicine specialist and clinical professor; Wynne Satterwhite, principal at Los Altos High; Susan Flatmo, psychologist and clinical services coordinator for the Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District; and William Blair, assistant principal at Mountain View High. Lisa Medoff, developmental psychologist specializing in adolescent mental health, will moderate the panel.

BCS schedules parent info nights

Bullis Charter School has scheduled parent information nights for its K-5 and middle school programs.

The K-5 program information night is slated 7 p.m. Jan. 14 in the Bullis Charter School Multipurpose Room, 102 W. Portola Ave., Los Altos. The middle school program night is scheduled 7 p.m. Jan. 22 in the Multipurpose Room.
