Living Classroom seeks volunteers

The Living Classroom Program seeks volunteers who enjoy working with students and appreciate nature.

Volunteer docents lead interactive, hands-on lessons to teach students the interconnectedness of the world. The program reaches all grade levels in the Los Altos School District and includes education in science, math and social studies. The program also serves schools in the Mountain View Whisman and Palo Alto Unified school districts.

MVLA foundation hosts parent education event

The Los Altos-Mountain View Parent Education Speaker Series has scheduled Lynn O’Shaughnessy to discuss “Looking for the Right College at the Right Price” 7 p.m. Sept. 10 in Los Altos High School’s Eagle Theater, 201 Almond Ave.

O’Shaughnessy is a nationally recognized college expert, higher-education journalist, consultant and speaker. Her chief goal is to help families with teenagers, as well as high school counselors and college and financial consultants, become smart college shoppers as they search for schools.

MVLA Scholars seeks mentors

MVLA Scholars seeks volunteers for its College Prep Mentoring Program, which pairs high school juniors and seniors with local residents who shepherd them through the college application process.

The program specifically targets juniors and seniors in Los Altos and Mountain View high schools’ AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) classes, geared to first-generation and low-income college-bound students.

Los Altos Robotics hosts parent information event

Los Altos Robotics, a nonprofit group that promotes youth robotics activities, has scheduled an information meeting for parents 7:30-9 p.m. Monday in Room 522 at Mountain View High School, 3535 Truman Ave.

Los Altos Robotics competes in the First LEGO League, a worldwide program in which teams of children in grades 4-9 design, build and program a robot to compete against other teams in a game. This year’s game objective is set to be announced Tuesday and competitions will take place in November.

Online public school hosts information session

California Connections Academy @ Ripon, a tuition-free online public school, has scheduled an information session in Los Altos 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Residence Inn Palo Alto-Los Altos, 4460 El Camino Real.

The session is aimed at families interested in learning about the program andĀ the school’s individualizedĀ approach to education. California Connections Academy @ Ripon is authorized under state law by the Ripon Unified School District and is open to students in grades K-12 who reside in Santa Clara County, among other areas.
