Mathnasium hosts TriMathlon event

Mathnasium, a local math-tutoring center, has scheduled a TriMathlon math competition for local students Oct. 19.

The TriMathlon is open to second- through fifth-graders who attend public or private schools or who are homeschooled. Students need not be enrolled in a Mathnasium center to participate.

According to organizers, the TriMathlon contest is designed to show students that math can be fun. Children at all levels of math ability are invited to compete. In addition to winning trophies, all participants will earn money for their local schools with every correct answer.

MVLA Foundation offers Science Showcase

The Mountain View Los Altos High School Foundation is scheduled to host a Science Showcase 7 p.m. Oct. 16 at Los Altos High School, 201 Almond Ave.

Parents and community members are invited to experience first-hand how students are learning chemistry, biology, physics, clean-tech and more at the local high schools.

Teachers and students will be on hand for demonstrations of the latest foundation-funded classroom science equipment.

PNG seeks volunteers

Partners for New Generations, a nonprofit group that provides mentors and tutors to local students, has scheduled a volunteer information night and open house 6-7 p.m. Oct. 8 at the Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District offices, 1299 Bryant Ave., adjacent to Mountain View High School.

Teens and their volunteer adult mentors do everything from bowling to hiking, cooking and going to movies. Primarily they talk – and listen – to one another. The relationships are designed to help struggling students build self-esteem and find positive direction in their lives.

Through the information night, PNG hopes to attract new volunteers to serve as tutors for elementary and middle-school students and mentors at the high-school level.

Egan schedules e-waste collection

Egan Junior High School has scheduled its annual e-waste recycling event 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 5 in the school’s parking lot, 100 W. Portola Ave., Los Altos.

GreenMouse Recycling will be on hand to collect e-waste items and ensure that toxic electronic waste is responsibly recycled.

Proceeds benefit Egan’s Science Department.

Montclaire hosts benefit run/walk

The fourth annual Montclaire 5K Run/Walk is scheduled 8:30 a.m. Sunday. The 3.1-mile course begins and ends in the back parking lot at Montclaire Elementary School – located at 1160 St. Joseph Ave., Los Altos – and runs through the surrounding Highlands neighborhood and into Rancho San Antonio Open Space Preserve.

Entry fee is $35 in advance (includes T-shirt), $50 on the day of the event. There will also be a free 1-mile fun run for children. Proceeds support the Montclaire Parent Teacher Organization.

Living Classroom recruits volunteers

The Los Altos School District’s Living Classroom Program seeks volunteers who enjoy working with students and appreciate the outdoors.

The program reaches all grade levels in the district and includes hands-on education in science, math and social studies.

Training is available to acquaint docents with the lesson content. All materials are provided. A docent, often an assistant docent and one or two volunteer parents direct lessons inside or outside the classroom. A classroom management training is slated Monday.

To introduce potential volunteers to the gardens used in Living Classroom lessons, officials are scheduled to host a tour of several of the Los Altos school gardens Oct. 7.
