Local groups seek volunteers

JustREAD, a nonprofit, community-funded literacy program, seeks tutors to work at least one hour a week to help middle and high school students with reading.

The program trains tutors to work one-on-one with students in a supervised classroom setting during the school year.

JustMATH, a community-volunteer math-tutoring program, needs volunteer tutors to work at least one hour per week to help students improve their math skills.

JustMATH also seeks a site coordinator to manage one of its middle school tutoring programs. The site coordinator will oversee the scheduling of students/tutors and manage tutoring sessions. The part-time, volunteer position requires approximately five to eight hours per week.

Ed foundations host parent education event

The Los Altos-Mountain View School Speaker Series has scheduled Jeffrey Selingo to discuss “College (Un)Bound: The Changing Landscape of Higher Education” 7-9 p.m. Sept. 17 in Mountain View High School’s Spartan Theatre, 3535 Truman Ave.

Selingo has spent his career as a reporter and columnist covering colleges and universities worldwide. He is author of “College (Un)Bound” and editor-at-large of The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Selingo’s presentation will include information on the latest trends in higher education, how to compare and select colleges, Massive Open Online Courses and what to consider when choosing a major.

The presentation’s target audience is parents of sixth- through 12th-graders.

Admission is free.

The Mountain View-Los Altos High School Foundation, the Los Altos Educational Foundation and the Los Altos-Mountain View PTA Council co-sponsor the event.
